Description:

This four-day workshop will be two days of classroom and two days of a hands-on installation.

Theory, design and installation techniques necessary to install and maintain a solar domestic hot water system are the main topics. Numerous systems such as passive solar water heaters, drainback systems, antifreeze systems and photovoltaic-powered systems are all discussed, as well as an introduction to pool heating and space heating systems. Solar collectors, pumps, blowers, controls, storage tanks, heat exchangers, mounting systems, repair and more will be covered. Safety considerations, code compliance, system sizing and solar collector performance in a variety of climates and applications will be addressed.

The workshop will address the NABCEP thermal task analysis and include information extracted from the NABCEP thermal candidate's handbook. Lessons learned from the past thirty years in the solar water heating industry are included in the classroom and installation components.

The instructor is Chuck Marken of Remod Inc. Chuck is a New Mexico licensed plumber, electrician and heating and air conditioning contractor. He has been installing and servicing solar thermal systems since 1979. He teaches for Solar Energy International and is the solar thermal editor for Home Power magazine.

Breakfast is included in the class fee. Bring your own lunch. Dress for the classroom for the first two days. Dress for physical labor, with sturdy shoes (no sandals) for the second two days. Minimum 14 students.

Students must attend all 4 days of the class to receive a Certificate of Completion. Completion of the class can be used toward NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certification.

The classroom portion of the class (Thurs and Fri) will be at Central United Methodist Church at 201 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque, (505) 243-7834. Click here for a map. From the intersection of I-25 and I-40 (the Big I), go south on I-25 to Central Ave, go east to University, go north to the the church on the west side of the road (2nd or 3rd building). It will take 5-10 minutes to get there. Stay tuned!

The installation portion will be held in the East Mountains, about 25 minutes from the east side of Albuquerque (Tramway and I-40). Students must bring their own lunch and are encouraged to carpool. Only participants wearing soft-soled shoes (tennis and the like) will be allowed on the roof on days three and four. Leather-soled shoes are not permitted on roofs due to safety concerns.

Some camping is available at the installation site, which is about 35 min. from the classroom. Camping is limited to 2-4 people as facilities are limited. Please contact the office if you are interested.
